Almere
Get to know the fastest growing city in the Netherlands
Almere is a young and dynamic city in the Netherlands, boasting a unique story. Unlike
most cities, it wasn’t built on existing land, but on what was once the seabed! From 1959 to
1968, a massive land reclamation project transformed the Ijsselmeer into the Southern
Flevoland polder, paving the way for Almere’s first house in 1976. Today, it’s the
Netherlands’ eighth-largest city, and holds the record for the fastest growing city in the
country. With ambitious plans to reach 350,000 inhabitants by 2030, Almere is a city on the
rise.
Location, location, location
Almere is one of the main cities in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. The municipality of
Almere comprises the districts Almere Stad, Almere Haven, Almere Buiten, Almere Hout
(under construction), Almere Poort (under construction) and Almere Pampus (design
phase).
Almere is centrally located in Randstad, an urban zone containing the four major Dutch
cities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague, Rotterdam). Almere is in the vicinity of two
international airports, the port of Amsterdam and many rail and motorway connections.
However, Almere is more than a city dweller’s paradise. It offers unique waterscapes,
beaches, forests and nature reserves, making it an ideal location for families moving to the
Netherlands.
A modern city with green spaces
Almere is a meticulously planned city. Wide avenues, designated green spaces, and
innovative architecture create a fresh, extremely-liveable and contemporary feel. Nature
lovers will find ample parks, forests, and even beaches bordering the Markermeer.
Family-friendly activities
Almere caters to families. Numerous playgrounds, water sports facilities, and indoor
entertainment centres keep children occupied. Neighbourhoods are built around local
shopping centres that are accessible by foot or bicycle, offering easy access to shops,
clinics, and service-providers.
Amsterdam is right around the corner
While Almere offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, it’s conveniently located near
Amsterdam, the vibrant Dutch capital, which is only 20-25 minutes away. Excellent public
transport connections make day trips or weekend getaways a breeze.
A welcoming and diverse community
Almere’s young population fosters a multicultural and inclusive environment. The city
actively supports newcomers, offering language courses and integration programs to help
families settle in smoothly. Almere is home to residents of 181 different ethnicities and 153
different nationalities.
